Whirlpool pledges commitment to sustainable future

Appliance manufacturer Whirlpool has said that it aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent by 2030.

The parent company to KitchenAid, Hotpoint and Indesit has announced its commitment to a sustainable future.

In 2019, Whirlpool Corporation achieved its best rate of emission and energy reductions in over a decade after investing in wind turbines and on-site solar panels, and is now working towards reducing its factories greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent by 2030.

The major domestic appliance manufacturer is also striving for a zero waste to landfill goal at all manufacturing sites by 2022. In the UK, re-usable coffee cups and stainless steel water bottles have been introduced, which will remove more than 158,000 single-use coffee cups and 56,000 plastic bottles from the firms canteens.

Ian Moverley, Public Affairs Director, Whirlpool UK Appliances Limited, says: ‘We believe that sustainability is vitally important and we are committed to improving our environmental efficiency, reducing waste and making positive changes that impact the planet in all areas of our business.

‘Sustainability is a key issue that exists across all areas of the market and we boast a portfolio consisting of highly efficient, functional and stylish appliances that are available at a variety of different price points. Our appliances allow consumers to save on their household bills, reduce their energy consumption and impact on the wider environment.’

Whilst this Kbb News item may be important for the industry and the jobs the firm has in the UK, which are needed by as many people as possible given the current circumstances, we also need to remind ourselves that we havent forgotten how they acted in respect of the Grenfell Fire.

To this day, Whirlpool still deny their appliance caused the Grenfell Fire.

The BEIS report that followed the Grenfell Tower inquiry quoted chairman Sir Martin Moore-Bick as saying he had ‘no doubt’ that the Grenfell fire was started by an electrical fault in a Hotpoint fridge-freezer, and dismissed a ‘fanciful’ claim by Whirlpool that the fire could have been sparked by a discarded cigarette.

Hopefully the time is up for firms such as Whirlpool that put profits before consumer safety but until then, Kitchens Kitchens believes that whilst Whirlpool continue its attempts to brush it all under the carpet, that we will balance their product releases and PR posts with the balance they rightly deserves, seeing as no other Kbb news outlet appeared to even acknowledge the issue for over two years either.
